Forte Ardietti is one of the 16 forts built by the Austrians as part of the Entrenched Camp of Peschiera. It was also included in the larger Quadrilatero defensive system, composed of Peschiera, Mantua, Verona, and Legnago, the core of Austrian military control in Italy.

Set in the morainic hills of Ponti sul Mincio, the fortress preserves extraordinary geometrical structures of stone and brick, creating an almost surreal atmosphere. For 160 years, it has retained its original layout, preserving the memory of the Italian Risorgimento.

Construction took place in two phases:

  • 1853-1859: excavation of the moat and building of the first defenses (Carnot wall, caponiers, earthworks).

  • 1859-1861: construction of the central redoubt.

The fortress could host 612 soldiers and was equipped with 25 cannons of various calibers, including 4 rifled breech-loading pieces. It remained under Austrian control until 1866, when, after the Third War of Independence, it passed to the Kingdom of Italy, keeping its military role until 1918. Later, it served as an ammunition depot until 1998, when it was transferred to the civil state property and then ceded to the Municipality of Ponti sul Mincio.

Forte Ardietti is part of the Network of Fortified Sites which, on the occasion of the European Heritage Days 2025, promotes the national initiative “Open Fortresses”, involving numerous fortified sites across Italy.
