Forte Aurelia joins the Network of Fortified Sites which, on this occasion, promotes the nationwide initiative “Open Fortresses”, involving about ten fortified sites across Italy.
The guided tour of Forte Aurelia, depending on ongoing works, will lead visitors through the discovery of fortified architecture, alternating monumental spaces, underground areas, grassy ramparts, and more.
The site is part of the Campo Trincerato di Roma (built between 1877 and 1891), consisting of 15 forts and 4 batteries defending the main access routes to the Capital, developed in a 37 km ring located about 4–5 km from the city.
The restoration works, promoted by the Guardia di Finanza, aim to give the fortress new cultural, museum, and exhibition functions, turning it into a multifunctional cultural center serving the city of Rome.
